A focused look at maternity in the Technology Sector
INSIGHT & CONSULTANCY
On average 50% of women leave the tech industry by the age of 35, often due to experiences with pregnancy, maternity, and the experience of returning to work. In partnership with MotherBoard, we wanted to better understand the experiences that contribute towards the statistic and identify what can be done to reduce it.
“We created HeyFlow as a direct result of conversations we were having with senior leaders around gender equity and inclusion and wanted to understand the direct impact reproductive health was having on their workforce. This research has been vital for creating more open conversations around pregnancy and return to work, and has helped our signatories in our joint mission in better supporting mothers in the tech industry”
Sophie Creese, Founder, MotherBoard & HeyFlow
Our Approach
We created a small focus group of twelve women who have all experienced pregnancy and maternity while working in technology professions from a range of businesses, ranging from SMEs to larger corporates.
The survey followed the maternity journey from announcement to returning to work, with a key focus on managerial support throughout
the process.
Outcomes
Although most of the findings were previously suspected, the results of the survey have provided MotherBoard with vital statistics that can be used to bolster the importance of their mission in supporting Mums In Tech.
The key pain points revealed in the survey have later helped inform the MotherBoard Charter’s ‘Return to Work Checklist’, which is part of their working toolkit for their signatories.
